How
it began…
Marika’s
Story
It was late one night
in 2007, my sister Liza had just dropped by and once again had
to listen to me grumble about the perils of motherhood. Today
my complaint was about BPA and the lack of glass baby bottles
out there. Even if I was to find them, there was no way they would
withstand my son Sam’s rambunctious behaviour. I explained
that someone needed to invent a bullet-proof glass bottle or more
sensibly, a cover for them, so hyperactive babies like Sam could
use them. I thought there must be something out there, but unfortunately
after searching everywhere I could, I came up empty-handed once
again. No bottles, no covers.
Lucky for me, she was
the brains of the family – her answer – we would start
our own company and the hunt would be over! Although I thought
she was crazy, I answered her questions: “What did this
cover need to do?” I explained that it needed to be durable
to protect the bottle from breakage. This was my number one concern.
Secondly, it needed
to keep the bottle warm or cold, be easy to clean, easy to fit
on and off the bottle, and lastly be easy to spot as I often found
that ever-elusive bottle under the crib or the seat of my car
(something she frowned upon and couldn’t understand, as
she had no children of her own).
After a zillion e-mails,
a few brainstorming sessions, and even a few hang-up phone calls,
voila! Sweet Pea Baby Supplies was born. Many long months later
our product is here and ready for others to enjoy, as it is time
to say good-bye to the ba-ba for Sammy. My real joy is that in
just a few short months it will be time for Liza to practice all
the should and shouldn’t have’s she gave me, as she
will welcome her own rambunctious baby into the world.
Liza’s
Story
Although my sister
may like to think that I’m the brains of the family, it
was really her idea that set our little company in motion. She
did indeed note that BPA was receiving a lot of bad press, and
was concerned about her little boy Sammy being protected from
this chemical. She had her idea for our Peapod bottle cover pretty
well thought out, and just needed me to do all the legwork. I
had to figure out how to source out everything we would need to
start a company and get our products made, and she kept on me
to make sure I was executing her dream to her satisfaction. We
did have many hang-up phone calls, but we managed to stick it
out and bring our idea to market. We hope you enjoy our products!
